hello again!
back from tokyo! we went to yokohama, the port town of tokyo, which is famous for its chinatown. very pretty. wr took lots of photos. the dark ones were taken at chinatown. also home of the ramen museum. ramen are the thin chinese noodles that are eaten in a soup here. extremely popular. we tried the hokkaido style miso tonkotsu, a scrumptious hearty soup made from a porkbone-marrow- and miso-based soup, topped with melt-in-your-mouth roast pork, beansprouts and cabbage, garnished with shredded negi onion. yum!

the next day we headed for beautiful nikko, which is the site of a temple and shrine complex called toshogu as well as burial ground of tokugawa ieyasu, the founder of the tokugawa shogunate, which was the last shogunate of japan and lasted an impressive 250 years.

nikko is unlike anything i've seen in japan as far as the sheer beauty of temples goes. there are thousands of wood carvings, most of them done ironically done by korean artisans. after chinatown, you'll see some pictures of the most gorgeous japanese garden i've ever come across, followed by pictures of a buddhist temple and tons of gates, a pagoda and shrines, both stationary and portable and more. and of course the original 3 wise monkeys!!

the last day we spent in tokyo, gettin up waaay too early to check out the famous fish market of tsujiki and to try some super-fresh and absolutely delectable sushi. well, strictly speaking, donburi, which really means 'stuff on rice in a bowl'. in my case, incredibly fresh sea urchin eggs (uni...mmmmm...). salmon roe (ikura...yum!), fatty tuna belly (toro, drool..), tuna (maguro)octopus (tako), salmon (sake..schmatzmampf!) unspecified white fish (shiromi) and chilled omelet (tamago-yaki). all for 10 bucks. yay!! then for some shopping in kanda and shibuya followed by general wandering around. oh the fun!
